THERMO-COAGULATION OVERVIEW
Spider veins are very thin, visible veins that may be an indication of a deeper vein problem or simply a cosmetic concern. They most commonly occur on the legs but are sometimes found on the face, hands, or other areas of the body. Both men and women may suffer from spider veins, however, they are more common in women.
Spider veins can be caused by the backup of blood. They can also be caused by hormone changes, sun exposure, or acute injuries. Wearing compression stockings may minimize unwanted blood vessels from developing on the legs.
At Essence Of L Medi Spa, we offer Thermo Coagulation for the treatment of facial spider veins.
WHAT IS THERMO-COAGULATION?
Thermo Coagulation is a minimally invasive technique used in the treatment of spider veins, fine telangiectasia, skin tags, milia, and small cherry angiomas. Most patients find the treatment to be quick, with minimal discomfort. During the treatment, a hair-thin probe is placed on the unsightly vein, and a micro burst of high energy heats the vein, coagulating the blood and collapsing the vein wall. A treatment session can take 15 minutes to one hour depending on the size of the area being treated.
WHO SHOULD RECEIVE THERMO-COAGULATION?
People with fine spider veins, telangiectasia, small angiomas, skin tags, milia, and pigmentation damage. This treatment works best on spider veins that are 0.3mm or smaller in diameter. For reference, a human hair averages about 0.1mm. It is not designed to treat large veins under the skin. Those are best treated by injection. You are not a good candidate if you have a pace maker or similar cardiac (heart) device; have a history or present diagnosis of epilepsy ( seizures); are pregnant; have an allergy to metals, specially nickel.
WHAT CAN I EXPECT AFTER THE TREATMENT?
Results are seen immediately, with continuous improvements over several weeks. Micro-abrasions, swelling, and redness will be noticed immediately after the treatment. The skin will be sensitive for several days, and harsh chemicals should be avoided on the treated area. The use of aloe vera and arnica cream can relieve some discomfort and discolorations. It is very important to remember not to scratch of rub the treated area, as this can prematurely pull the scabs off causing trauma which leads to slower healing times. Although treated veins generally do not return, new veins may develop over time. “touch-ups” are always recommended.
WHAT ARE THE RISKS AND SIDE EFFECTS?
As with any medical treatment, there are certain risks and side effects associated with thermocoagulation. You can expect bruising, redness, swelling, and sensitivity in the area that was treated. With some treatments ( milia, age spots, skin tags, enlarged pores, angiomas) there will be scabbing and redness. This is normal and part of the healing process!
HOW IS THERMO-COAGULATION DIFFERENT FROM IPL ( INTENSE PULSED LIGHT) AND SCLEROTHERAPY?
Unlike IPL or laser therapy, thermocoagulation is not skin type dependent, and it is inherently safer than those therapies. Thermocoagulation targets the specific vein, versus a generalized area, in contrast to IPL. Sclerotherapy is ideal for large veins underneath the skin. It can treat most spider veins but requires multiple treatment sessions.
