Understanding the importance of proper exfoliation

We all know that it is important and critical to our skins health to embrace a skincare routine to help manage and prevent premature aging, as well as maintaining undesirable skin conditions ( Acne, wrinkles, pigment, rosacea.)  While it is important to keep the skin properly cleansed, hydrated, and protected from dangerous UV exposure……. The role of the infamous “exfoliation” is often a misstep. Lets weigh in on why and how the proper exfoliation is the master key to enjoying a Beautiful Healthy Glow!

Exfoliation is simply the process of removing dead skin cells. By eliminating these layers, we are able to reveal a brighter, more youthful, healthier skin which lies just below the surface. As we age, the need for exfoliation becomes more apparent because our skin loses the ability to generate and shed skin cells naturally. Unfortunately, the result of this process leads us to a damaged, dull, aged complexion that can add years to our face.

What is the best reason to exfoliate? It’s simple, the quick and easy process of a gentle exfoliation will stimulate the Epidermal Layers of your skin to produce more cells at a rapid rate. Let’s use grapes as a metaphor: Think of your skin cells in the Basal Layer (the bottom layer) of your skin like nice plump, juicy grapes. As the cells age and move up towards the Stratum Corneum (the upper layers) of the skin they become flattened and compressed like raisins. By removing these “raisins” we stimulate more “grapes” to grow. How amazing does that sound!

Not all skin exfoliation products are created equal; some products may even cause more harm then good. Over the counter Granular (manual) exfoliating products which usually consist of ground up apricot, walnut, or bark; due to its cheap cost ratio, can create micro lesions in the skin which lead to redness and inflammation.  I recommend using a gentle Acid-based (chemical) exfoliation product such as a glycolic acid, lactic acid, or salicylic acid for daily use at home. When incorporating these products into your daily routine, the acid-based treatment product will gently dissolve those dead skin cells; revealing a healthier, brighter complexion.

Clarisonic Cleansing Brush- This gentle, yet extremely powerful tool delivers the power punch you may be looking for. Gentle enough to use twice a day, this ultrasonic cleansing system allows your skincare products to penetrate further into the dermis- making your products more efficient and cost effective.

Medical grade spa treatments exfoliate the skin at a much deeper, more precisely controlled level. Professional treatments not only result in a brighter, smoother complexion, but they also offer longer lasting cellular improvement to texture, skin tone, softening of fine lines, and pigments conditions ( freckles and sun spots.)

Popular medical-grade treatments include: Microdermabrasion, Clinical Peels/Enzymes, Dermal Rolling/Micro Needling, and IPL/Fraxel Laser.
