We are proud to be the first Medi Spa in White Rock to offer Skin DNA testing!

Skin DNA was launched April 2016 in Canada and at Essence Of L Medi Spa & Laser, we were quick to jump on board. Skin DNA testing allows us to better analyze your skin health needs. We simply take a swab of your DNA and send it to the laboratory where they test 16 different genetic markers found in your DNA. This revolutionary process allows us to determine your strengths and weaknesses and precisely how your skin will age.

There are 5 different categories that take the guesswork out of your skin care and identify exactly what ingredients, supplements and procedures would be best suited for you. These categories are:
  • 1. Firmness and Elasticity
  • 2. Glycation
  • 3. Sun Damage
  • 4. Free Radical Damage
  • 5. Sensitivity and Inflammation.

By taking this test, it will boost your knowledge and present the tools that will help slow down the process at which these genetic markers may activate in your skin. Your environment and lifestyle factors can also affect the longevity and time of this process. For example, someone who may have poor diet choices, a high alcohol consumption, high-stress levels, is a smoker, and spends a majority of their time in the sun will have a higher chance of seeing these factors form at an earlier age. More information on the categories tested is as follows.

Firmness + Elasticity:

This category focuses on accelerated collagen loss before the signs become visible. Collagen is the key protein in the skin that is able to keep it looking firm, plump, and wrinkle-free. Collagen gets produced and broken down in our skin on a daily basis, and over time the amount being produced becomes less and less. If your score rated at a high-risk percentage, it is very important to make this category your primary focus for your skincare needs, and possibly a lifestyle change. A few examples of the visible effects in this category are drooping eyelids, hollowed cheeks, and sagging skin.

Glycation:

This category represents the collagen and elastin fibres in the skin. The DNA characteristics you are born with determine your glucose levels. If not broken down properly the sugar molecules will attach itself to your skins elastin fibres and collagen, causing your skin to loose elasticity. Glycation on the skin presents itself looking like wrinkles that have a hashtag appearance. Some examples that might accelerate your chances of glycation are smoking, sugary foods like donuts, sugary drinks like lattes, baked foods, and those who have Diabetes.

Sun Damage + Pigmentation:

90% of skin aging, skin damage, and skin cancer is caused by exposure to UV rays. There are two types of UV rays, UVA, and UVB. Different variations in your genes can determine whether you can have a higher sensitivity to sunlight and can make you more susceptible to sunburns, skin cell damage, premature aging, and can increase your risks of cancer. Making sure you have a proper skin care regime on a daily bases that includes protection from the suns UV rays is extremely important if you have a high risk in this category.

Free Radical Damage:

It is scientifically proven that free radicals have been known to cause different varieties of diseases from cancer, to heart disease, arthritis, and even cataracts. It is also known to have a major negative impact in the process at which our skin ages. Free Radical damage can take a toll on our skin creating the appearance of dull lifeless skin, uneven skin tone and texture, accelerated aging, excessive oiliness or dryness, and irregular pigmentation. That is why it is important that if you scored a high risk in this category that you pay close attention to topical ingredients and take necessary steps to drastically slow the signs of aging, and preserving the natural glow of your skin.

Sensitivity + Inflammation

People who scored in the high-risk percentage in this category often overproduce inflammatory proteins and can lead to accelerated aging. You may often be prone to redness and sensitivity, to the weather and topical ingredients such as perfumes. This may also increase your risk of asthma, allergies, and hay fever. From knowing these results as a skin care professional, it will allow us to better prepare you from potential prolonged downtime from a procedure and how you may react.

Not only does Skin DNA enhance the world of medical esthetics, but it gives each and every client personalized knowledge to help improve their own skin from a different perspective. It gives an opportunity for clients such as yourself to prevent the inevitable from happening before it becomes visible. Let the science take control and give your skin exactly what it needs to see maximum results, stopping the signs of aging in its tracks.
